The Flagler Beach Junior Lifeguard Summer Program started June 11 and offers weekly sessions through Aug. 10, giving youngsters a chance to learn the techniques of ocean rescue in a safe, fun environment.

Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Jay McDonough received funeral honors Friday morning, including the more than a mile-long procession of vehicles that stretched from the International Speedway Boulevard beach ramp to the Silver Beach access.
McDonough, 52, collapsed and died during a run Feb. 16.

The Volusia County Lifeguards Junior Lifeguard camp "is not a learn-to-swim camp," says Chris Atkinson, Junior Lifeguards coordinator. "We teach them about marine life, rip currents and water safety." Campers get a taste of what it takes to be a lifeguard as well as an introduction to lifesaving.

Local rookie lifeguards did well the first day of the USLA Southeast Regional Lifeguard Championships, held July 21-22 on the beach just south of the Daytona Beach Pier. Sixteen chapters competed from across the state in different races and rescue challenges for top honors.
