A big grin broke across Ben Rice's face Thursday as soon as he heard the word "transience," which he knew would win him a second consecutive championship in the Volusia County Spelling Bee.
Ben stepped to the microphone Thursday afternoon, GFebruary 24, 2011, and carefully spelled the word to beat out 33 other spellers in the countywide event at DeLand Middle School. Hannah Ginsburg, an eighth-grader at Ormond Beach Middle School, was the runner-up. She was eliminated in the 11th round after failing to spell "mimetic," an adjective meaning characterized by or exhibiting a superficial resemblance of some organisms to each other or the natural objects among which they live.

Twelve hundred children and thousands of their family members from across the country bused, drove and flew into Central Florida this week for Battle At The Beach, a football championship event of the Amateur Athletic Union, with a day of sign-up activities, four days of elimination games and a scouting day for seventh and eighth grade games, all played at Municipal Stadium, Father Lopez High School and Derbyshire Park.
