Members of the Philippine-American Association of Palm Coast had a few reasons to celebrate Saturday as they hosted a Philippines Independence Day dinner at the Palm Coast VFW Hall while also commemorating the 20th anniversary of the local club, which was founded in 1992. Philippines Independence Day is traditionally celebrated on June 12 and this year marked the 114th year of independence from Spain, which occurred with the signing of the Philippine Declaration of Independence in 1898.

The life of Tom Walsh is remembered at a memorial service at St. Peter Catholic Church in DeLand on Thursday, April 5, 2012. Walsh, the manager of the Mainstreet Grill in DeLand, was shot and killed during a robbery Saturday night.

Matt McGuirk was 31 when he died Oct. 8, presumably from an accidental overdose, though his family is still waiting for autopsy results. Not that it matters. Most people celebrate their birthdays with cake. Ninety-six-year-old Don Sugg celebrated his by jumping out of a plane. The DeLand man has made it a habit to skydive with each passing year. He'll turn 97 on Sept. 29.
He chose to jump today so his skydive would coincide with Alzheimer's Action Day, a cause he supports. He plummeted 14,000 feet in tandem, and his parachute brought him down safely about 11:30 a.m. Once he was on the ground, he donned a cap that declared he was "97 and still counting."

Eighteen well-dressed bridegrooms, including one in a light chocolate color Mariachi-style suit, walked in first. They headed to the altar as the choir sang the message that it is beautiful to love.
Then the wedding march began, and 18 brides in white, cream or ivory wedding gowns — carrying bouquets, some followed by their small children — marched in to meet the grooms in the center aisle of the church.
The couples, ages 19 to 72, exchanged vows in a "boda comunitaria" — a community wedding — considered a rare event in the area, said Delia Morales, the person in charge of the group Juan 23, which organizes retreats for the church.

Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Jay McDonough received funeral honors Friday morning, including the more than a mile-long procession of vehicles that stretched from the International Speedway Boulevard beach ramp to the Silver Beach access.
McDonough, 52, collapsed and died during a run Feb. 16.

Sgt. Michael Miller, 40, a husband and father of two, died Aug. 3 of a heart attack at his Orange City home, police said. The sergeant began his career with the Daytona Beach Police Department in 1993 and received two Distinguished Service Citations. Following tradition, a police dispatcher radioed police Wednesday to observe a moment of silence for Miller and designate him "10-7," or out of service.

Ormond Beach native and fourth-year medical student Lauren Leffler arrives at the Granada beach approach for a quick swim in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday April 25, 2010. Leffler traveled 4020 miles in 31 days across the country to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children. She raised more than $6,300 dollars and rode through snow, heavy wind and hail along her journey.
