Nature enthusiasts arrived by the dozens Sunday, April 11 to enjoy the fifth annual Spring Fling at Sugar Mill Gardens in Port Orange, eager to talk with experienced gardeners and find new plants to spruce up their yards.

An American Kestrel named Katie was on display by Wild About Birds, a nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental education, conservation and preservation of habitats for the benefit of Florida's birds and other wildlife. This small North American hawk, which breeds from Northwest Territories and Alaska east through Maritime Provinces and south throughout most of the continent, is known to eat bats, rodents, insects, frogs, small reptiles and birds. An Eastern screech-owl named Mr. Frodo was among the wildlife on display Sunday afternoon during the annual Spring Fling event at Sugar Mill Gardens in Port Orange. Although these small owls typically go unnoticed, they are very common in residential areas. They nest in a tree cavities, either natural or excavated by a woodpecker, and they will also use nesting boxes. Photo by Debbie Roberts
