A buffer Dave Caskey had previously cleared along his home off Larkspur Road in DeLand helped firefighters defend his home from advancing flames. Firefighters say such defensible space is critical in helping to protect private property. On June 23, Caskey mowed his lawn for the first time since the fire in mid-June, marveling at his near-miss from the intense fire. (Dinah Voyles Pulver)
