  • For three quarters, the Atlantic girls basketball team mostly sleepwalked through its Class 3A regional quarterfinal game with Melbourne Central Catholic, allowing an inferior team to hang around. But suddenly at the start of the fourth quarter the lights went on, Atlantic woke up, got some strong pressure defense from guard Dee Gilyard, and pulled away with a huge 14-0 run, sparking the Sharks to a 48-31 victory.

They were whistled for eight fouls in the first quarter as well. Despite the rust, the Sharks (9-2) were sharp enough to wrestle away a 47-36 victory over Cookeville, Tenn. (5-9), Tuesday in the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic at Atlantic Gymnasium.
