  • Members of the Philippine-American Association of Palm Coast had a few reasons to celebrate Saturday as they hosted a Philippines Independence Day dinner at the Palm Coast VFW Hall while also commemorating the 20th anniversary of the local club, which was founded in 1992. Philippines Independence Day is traditionally celebrated on June 12 and this year marked the 114th year of independence from Spain, which occurred with the signing of the Philippine Declaration of Independence in 1898.

  • Most people celebrate their birthdays with cake. Ninety-six-year-old Don Sugg celebrated his by jumping out of a plane. The DeLand man has made it a habit to skydive with each passing year. He'll turn 97 on Sept. 29.
    He chose to jump today so his skydive would coincide with Alzheimer's Action Day, a cause he supports. He plummeted 14,000 feet in tandem, and his parachute brought him down safely about 11:30 a.m. Once he was on the ground, he donned a cap that declared he was "97 and still counting."

    The 6-foot-tall hoopster earned a living from the sport she loves, playing with professional women's basketball teams in Europe, as well as representing her ancestral homeland -- Greece -- in the 2004 Olympic games. She also fulfilled a desire to travel to some of the poorest parts of the world pursuing her dream of bringing smiles to the faces of people who have no reason to smile and a bit of joy to the hearts of children and people outcast from society by leprosy a biblical-era semi-contagious skin disease that can cause disfiguring sores and the loss of digits such as fingers and toes -- in Latur, India.
